Detoxing needs nourishment. The idea that the body needs to be ’emptied’ to get clean is a perpetual myth. The reality is our bodies are pretty efficient at detoxication, it’s simply in line with homeostasis, a natural balance where by the body always returns to harmony. It does this by constantly getting rid of natural biochemical byproducts. We eat, we poop, we sleep, we breathe. All unconscious intelligence keeping the body free from harm.

Fasting is a different type of detox altogether. Starvation signals ‘autophagy’ or cell death, and is a true way to boost health outcomes. I talk about this more in the Mind Body Reset. Today I want to clarify foods that detox.

For us to detox, what we really need is to better support these natural processes. The gut, liver, skin, lymphatics, kidneys and lungs. We can do this by supporting the gut with the right food; probiotics and fibre, mopping up toxins with chlorophyll from green foods, and eating fats. Detox processes do need fat to be switched on at a biochemical level, so low-fat detoxes don’t work!

Sugar is also a toxin to the liver, in exactly the same way as alcohol. So a really simple detox would simply be to skip the sugar and high starch foods that convert to sugar. Spare your liver all that extra work, and your body will reward you with less brain fog, better balance hormones, less bloating and clearer skin.

Here’s a gorgeous high fibre, high protein, high fat! and low sugar smoothie to help your body do all the good things it knows how to do. It is one of the smoothies featured in the diet plan for the Mind Body Reset program which runs a few times a year. If you want to learn more about detoxing you will definitely want to check it out.

Ingredients:

  • 1 small raw zucchini
  • 1/4 cup, handful of raw spinach
  • 2 tbs coconut yogurt
  • 2 tbs activated cashews (soaked in water overnight then rinsed)
  • 2 tbs extra virgin olive oil
  • 1 scoop chocolate protein powder (I use Whey Protein Isolate sweetened with stevia, if you don’t have this you can use hemp seeds or pumpkin seeds pus a little bit of vanilla stevia plus a tbs of raw cacao powder for the chocolate hit)
  • 2 x raw egg yolks
  • 1 cup almond milk
  • 1 tsp spirulina powder
  • 6 ice cubes

Method. Simply pop it all in the blender and whizz it up! Add more water if needed.

Let me know if you love this smoothie as much as I do!

Yours in shining (high fat) health,
